Ben Tryer lives in the town of Homer, Alaska. Homer is a town with little to no immigration but major immigration issues and debates. While most people are automatically choosing a side in the argument of immigration, Ben is choosing to stay neutral in the debate until he gathers enough information to make his final decision. He searched though internet websites and articles on his topic. He also read both sides of the arguments so he could ensure he know both the negatives and positives about both sides. His biggest struggle though out his research, is the same problem most of us face, finding reliable and unbiased information.
To make sure my sources are credible, I first check the date of the publication. I have learned that it is best to stay within the ten-year mark, unless your topic is something from or relates to the past. Another way is to look up reviews on the website itself. I believe anything with .edu at the end is a reliable source, .edu means it comes from an educational website. I believe people can talk about controversial issues without being biased, although it is very difficult. I myself have a very hard time not putting in my opinion but if someone focuses hard enough being neutral in a conversation about a controversial issue, it can happen.
I am researching the foster care community, specifically foster care programs that are designed to help adolescence in foster care. I am interested in this community because I had a friend in High School that at sixteen was left homeless, we had been friends for a few months and I never even knew. When she finally came out and told me, she had already got in contact with a foster care help program in our area. They helped her emotionally, financially and provided her with a safe place to stay. She’s now a sophomore in college and has completely changed her life around. I want to explore how my local foster care help program; Forward Paths helps kids aging out of foster care.
