Genre 1: Flyer

For my first genre, I chose to create a flyer designed to promote an upcoming event for my organization.  I chose to compose in this genre because I thought it would be a good way to communicate with the public about an upcoming event for Forward Paths. Forward Paths is a local organization so posting flyers around the town would be a great way to invite people to the event. I have made many flyers in the past to promote other organizations events and activities, especially in high school. For this particular genre, I did not start with a poem; I knew from the beginning that I wanted to have a flyer as one of my genres. The process of composing this genre was very long. I began with the decision of whether or not to do an online flyer or a physical flyer (one that I draw and color myself). I chose to do an online flyer because I do not have the best handwriting and I want my flyer to be legible. I had a very hard time finding a website that would let me create the kind of flyer I wanted to create. After searching through many websites, I finally decided on one called poster my wall. It let me choose a template and edit it to form my specific flyer. To create my flyer, I looked up information of Forward Paths events and chose to base the flyer off of the Annual luncheon. I then added a date, time, and description of the event. I then saved the flyer to my computer as a photograph. In the real world, this genre is posted on walls and in the hall ways of schools, restaurants and local community buildings to reach out to the local people in our community. This specific genre reaches out to both the local youth in the community and other older members of the community that may be interested in this event. The event is free for everyone so it welcomes local citizens of every age group. However, most people that attend are there because they are touched by the cause that Forward Paths supports.

Genre 2: PowerPoint

For my second genre, I chose to create a PowerPoint based off of what and how Forward Paths was created and also how it works. I chose to compose in this genre because at every Forward Path event there is always a PowerPoint or video presentation that is shown to the audience. It is shown as an informational presentation about Forward Paths and usually includes personal stories to appeal to the audience’s emotions. I have created many PowerPoints throughout my life for school assignments and projects. For this specific genre, I did not start with a poem; I knew right away when I heard about this assignment that I had to do a PowerPoint in order for my audience to understand the organization and how it effects our community. I began the process of creating this PowerPoint by selecting the topics in the presentation I was going to talk about. I then labeled each slide with each title. After doing lots of research I categorized all the information into the slides of the PowerPoint. After all the information, had been taken down, I then added a themed background and photos into the slide show for more details. In the real world, this genre would be shown at any Forward Paths event such as their annual luncheon or Bike prom. The PowerPoint is meant to inform its audience abut Forward Paths and how it helps its community. This specific genre reaches out to the people who have attended a Forward Paths event. It is used to inform the audience about Forward Paths and encourage people to donate.

Genre 3: Ad Video

For my third genre, I chose to create an Ad video for Forward Paths. I chose to compose in this genre because Forward Paths usually has an ad to promote their organization and help raise awareness of the homeless youth struggling in our community. The ad uses a lot of pathos, and logos to create a factual yet emotional short clip to create a successful as video. I have never created a video add before or used any sort of technology to help me create an ad.

For this genre, I did not start with a poem. I started this genre as an Instagram page but after just creating the account I knew that this wasn’t a suitable genre for my research topic. I then switched it to an Ad video, which I feel has more of an effect for its audience. An Ad may sometime be seen as overdone but in this specific case, it is the most effective way to reach out to its target audience. The process of creating an Ad video was the hardest out of all three genres. I have absolutely no previous knowledge of how to edit and create a video ad. I started with downloading many video apps onto my phone and testing them all out. They were all very confusing. I eventually chose to do my presentation on IMovie. I added photos and key quotes I felt were good for the video. I also made both of my roommate’s act in the video for me. Adding quotes into the video was the hardest part of the film. To add any written text, I had to create a PowerPoint on my computer, then email it to myself, then open my email on my phone to take a screen shot and one by one add the slide to the video. It took me hours to figure out and edit the video. I finally finished and saved the video then transferred it onto my computer. In the real world, this genre would be on television as an Ad in between shows to promote Forward Paths. This specific genre reaches to two separate audiences, one is to youth struggling in the community and the other is those who would like to help with the cause by donating or volunteering.

One thing I would like to tell you about my compositions is about my third genre, the Ad video. I had an extremely hard time creating this ad. The apps that I was using did not allow me to do half of the things that I was imaging I would be able to do with my project. However, I did the absolute best I could.
